Beacon Hill – Historic District Community

Beacon Hill is a lovely neighborhood in the midst of Lakeland’s historic district. Everything is within easy reach and walking is something that’s not frowned upon. In fact, you likely won’t need but your two feet to take you anywhere you might need to go. Plenty of fantastic dining and drinking establishments, a varied and unique blend of housing options and diverse neighbors is something you’ll love if that’s the sort of place you gravitate to.

History of Beacon Hill

Lakeland has eight historic districts, each of which possesses its own brand of unique architectural styles. Beacon Hill is among them, and often is referred to by locals as “The Reservation,” due to its Native American street names including Cherokee, Comanche, Hiawatha, Pawnee, Pueblo, Seminole and Shawnee Trails.

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, homes in the Beacon Hill District are notorious for holding high property and resale values.

The bulk of the homes in this small historic district west of South Florida Avenue, north of Beacon Road and south of Belvedere Street were constructed in the 1920’s. Its architectural styles include modest frame bungalows, as well as colonial and tudor revival homes. This district always has attracted upper-middle class residents, and many of its residents have been mayors and state legislators, according to the City of Lakeland’s website.

It is believed this neighborhood is named after the fashionable Beacon Hill neighborhood in Boston. Eighty-nine of the approximately 150 structures in this neighborhood meet the criteria of having been built before 1945 to achieve historic district designation.

Beacon Hill Amenities

Folks interested in this neighborhood may buy homes here for their unique character and charm, but they also appreciate the neighborhood’s close proximity to nearby pockets of activity, such as Dixieland’s growing retail community of vintage and antique shops, and non-chain restaurants. Beacon Hill also is close to downtown Lakeland, a thriving business, shopping and retail district that is home to a variety of free events year-round, including monthly First Friday celebrations, Thursday Squared Food Truck Rally events, Music on the Promenade, Pics on the Promenade, the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival and countless other events.

Nearby Dobbins Park offers lots of open spaces, covered picnic shelters, a walking trail, playground equipment and basketball courts. Beacon Hill also is near the city’s Lake-to-Lake Bike Trail, which offers miles of scenery through other historic neighborhoods that connect the city’s many lakes.

Prices range from the low $100,000s to $500,000+ to purchase and rents are higher than in the more suburban parts of Lakeland.

If you’re looking for upscale living in a unique neighborhood that can be described as anything but cookie-cutter, consider the Beacon Hill district with its shady oaks and magnolias, friendly neighbors, and proximity to entertainment and activities that will keep you and your family as busy as you want to be in your free time.
