To maintain their good health, seniors in Carillon Lakes community homes are prescribed with various maintenance medications to help with various ailments. Apart from these, doctors are also very specific about keeping and maintaining an active lifestyle. Unfortunately, some active adults overlook a very important factor in achieving overall health and fitness: their diet.
Together with daily exercises, active adults should also be very vigilant when it comes to the food they eat. Apart from limiting cholesterol intake for better heart protection, here are some other healthy eating tips to take note of:
Fruits and vegetables
Regardless of age, everyone is encouraged to include a generous serving of fruits and vegetables in their daily diet. For fruits, 1 ½ to 2 servings a day is best. Also, try to avoid fruit juices and opt for whole fruits instead so you can get as much fiber and vitamins in your body. For vegetables, one tip is to put in as much color as possible to your plate. Get a mix of leafy greens (spinach, kale, broccoli, etc.), orange and yellow vegetables (carrots, squash, potatoes, etc.), or blue and purple ones (eggplant, purple asparagus, etc.). Aim for at least 2 cups of these colorful vegetables a day.
Protein-rich foods
Active adults living in Carillon Lakes community houses without any problems with their kidneys or blood sugar are recommended to take about 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per 2.2 lbs. of body weight. This means that for anyone weighing around 150 lbs., an average of 68 to 102g of protein a day is needed. To get this, make sure to divide your protein intake by your daily meals. Also, look to other protein-rich food sources such as beans or tofu, eggs, or nuts and seeds.
Calcium
Another important health tip for seniors is a 1,200mg of calcium intake per day. Calcium is needed to maintain your bone structure and prevent osteoporosis so you can enjoy even more of your outdoor hobbies and activities. To get this, include a healthy dose of fat-free or low-fat milk into your diet. Non-dairy sources of calcium are kale, tofu, almonds, and broccoli.
Water
Apart from all this recommended daily diet, active adults are also advised to replenish water in their bodies. As an active adult who enjoys a lot of the amenities in Carillon Lakes community such as the club house, tennis courts, basketball courts, walking and biking trails, outdoor pools, and more, it’s important to replenish the fluid lost through sweat. Take at least 8-10 glasses of water a day to keep yourself hydrated.
Keep in mind that an active body and a sound mind is achieved when you combine exercise with a healthy diet. Don’t let common ailments get in your way of achieving the lifestyle you dream of.
